Dead Malls in America and China / Deadmalls.com
I just discovered deadmalls.com, a compendium of shopping centres in the US that are now deserted. It’s an awful looking website but a fascinating concept. There’s an article about the phenomenon on Wikipedia too.
I took an interest in this because last weekend I discovered Tobacco Dock Shopping Village in Shadwell, East London. This project is truly amazing – a former Victorian warehouse that was converted to a shopping village in 1989. The owners thought they were creating “the Covent Garden of the East End”, but the place collapsed into debt less than a year later and promptly shut down. Amazingly, it’s still there, largely untouched, slowly falling into decay. And it’s still open to the public to explore.
I will be returning to this place with a camera.
