‘Our True Intent Is All For Your Delight’ / Photographs by John Hinde, edited by Martin Parr, 2005
John Hinde took & art directed these images as part of a series of publicity photos for Butlin’s holiday camps in the 60s & 70s. In 2005 Martin Parr edited a book of the images which was published by Chris Boot. It’s a remarkable body of work — the scenes of holidaymakers enjoying the futuristic wonders of Butlin’s just have to be seen to be believed. The architecture, interiors, lighting; it all looks like a bizarre, hyper-real art project. Although the people are genuine, Hinde meticulously planned the shots, and their surreal quality is only enhanced by the crystal-clear, vivid colours of his large-format prints.
I can’t believe these images haven’t made it onto my radar before now. Rest assured, I will be obtaining the book soon.
